DIWALI PUJA
Diwali Puja essentially means the worship of Laxmi, but that itself include the worship of Varuna, Navagraha, Sodasmatrka, Ganesa, Mahalaksmi, Mahakali, Mahasrasvati, Kubere, Tula and Mana, and Dipavali. It is almost always followed by a chanting of the Srisuktam.
LAXMI OR LIGHT ENERGY:
A
SCIENTIFIC VIEW OF THE FEMALE UNIVERSAL ENERGY
The MONEY flowing through her hand shows that she represents CASH FLOW and businesses. We must understand that MONEY is really energy. When you work, you expend your energy that cames from the processing of your food, which in turn is converted to labour for which the money you receive will be the measure. So if this energy is not earned properly or spent properly then the energy becomes destructive. MONEY is really light as it lightens people's lives, so it must flow all the time for the universe to function. The hoarding of money will affect the continuity of the Universe. A good way to understand this is as follows: YOU go to work, get paid , buy your grocery, cook your food, eat your food and use the same food (energy) to work again. In this case it is the work that is important because it is the karma that keeps the universe in continuity.
The LOTUS FLOWER represent the KNOWLEDGE or the height that is required for the money to flow. Obviously if a person is deep under water then he cannot see the light, or if a person is unable to give up the "darkness of ignorance" then he or she will not be able to ascend the ladder of prosperity. Thus, it is obvious that one must acquire knowledge to rise like the Lotus flower above THE MUD of laziness, passiveness etc. before one can acquire the WEALTH that comes from Light. If this Money is used properly and with wisdom, knowledge and spirituality, then no matter how much mud falls on you it will slide off like it does on the Lotus flower, and your life will always be shining and beautiful.
To invite Laxmi or the Goddess of Wealth into
your life you must first make a contract , a Mind and Soul contract , imprinted
within you, within which you must promise to use the money you earn wisely
for the benefit of the world and the universe. Like you are inviting a
SPECIAL GUEST into your home you must treat LAXMI or Money with respect
and Joy, you must feed her, clothes her, give her room in your home and
ALLOW HER STAY.
How do we do this?
BY PUJA (ritual)---Action
and Reaction.
How the image of Laxmi should be worshipped
with love so as to get the blessings of the Light.
Action or reaction: This means we must avoid
the colors, the foods, the drinks and other materials that kill the light.
The most important thing to remember is that we must observe the following
ritual if we need to create a stable financial status in our life and to
invite a great deal of prosperity into our business, our home and our MINDS
through this great KNOWLEDGE OF LIGHT.
ABOUT YOU, THE YAJAMANA:
The person who, individually or on behalf
of a concern, sit to perform the yajna or puja and pay the expenses, is
called the yajamana.
TIMING OF THE PUJA:
Puja cannot be performed at any time the yajamana
wishes. The appropriate time must be given after consulting the Indian
astrological calendar or panjika. This is not so easy. Laxmi Puja must
be performed as a Sthira Lagna. Indian astrology has divided the 24 hours
of the day into 12 lagnas or time spans. They are of three types, Sthira
Puja for a newly bought car, for instance, will be done on a Cara Lagna.
Puja for steady or lasting prosperity to be performed at the time of Sthira
Lagna.
This year 2002, Diwali is on November 4th. There are two sthira lagnas appropriate for Laxmi Puja on that day.
1. Dhanus (Unicorn): after sunset, from 5:44pm. to 7:38 pm.
2. Meena (fish) from 12 midnight to 2 a.m.
This will be more suitable for the world because
of the type of disasters we are experiencing
in the world today.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE PUJA:
Before you sit down to worship Laxmi, be sure
to have collected all materials or ingredients. Some of them are
absolutely essential, some are not, however, it is up to you to decide
whether you will get any of the non-essentials.
ESSENTIAL MATERIAL REQUIRED:
Kalasa (pot)
This is a pot in the shape of an expanded
vase (a lota can be used in place of Kalash). Place water inside
the Kalash. Place the bunch of 5 or 5 Mango Leaves inside the neck
and place a saucer of rice on top of the Kalash. (This Saucer represents
the MOON). Place One big diya, filled with ghee, on the plate of
rice resting on top of the Kalash (this represents THE SUN). Together they
represent MAHA LAXMI. It is customary to set the pot on some grains of
unbroken rice. This pot represents Varuna, the God of the Ocean.
AND LAXMI as Mother Earth.
Place the other big diya on your right hands side - this one is for arti the wicks should be of the rolled up type. Another diya should be kept on the side next to Ganesh. This can be a small one, with a pulled up wick. This is for the purpose of performing arati later on. It should be placed on a small platter or tari on some rice.
Place a lower platform before the one on which the icons and the big diyas are placed. The red cloth should be spread on this lower platform. Now fill the other 8 (diyas) with ghee and wicks and place them around the Kalash in a Half circle with the circle towards you. Each diya is placed on a rice platform.
PERFORM SODASAMATRKA PUJANAM FIRST
(THE WORSHIP OF THE SIXTEEN MOTHERS)
The 16 mothers are represented on the platform by 16 small heaps of rice and a NUTMEG on top. Bowing to the 16 mothers, take rice, flowers and fragrance (atar) in your hands and say:
GOURI PADMA
SACI MEDHA SAVITRI VIJAYA JAYA DEVASENA SVADHA
SVAHA MATARO LOKAMATARAH HRSTIH PUSTISTATHA

Take a handful of rice, and pouring it through your fingers on the red cloth. This is the representation for various deities as explained below: Sprinkle the flowers, rice and fragrance (atar).
MAHALAXMI PUJANAM (THE WORSHIP OF MAHALAKSMI)

Drop the flowers and the rice at the feet of the goddess.
AVAHANAM (INVOCATION)
Now you have to invoke Laxmi. Avahanam is
the act of invoking her. Join your hands with palms upwards, only the little
fingers touching ( with open palms). Make the usual gesture of welcoming
guests in, and invite Laxmi to the household, office or factory where she
is going to be worshipped and say:
OM SARVA LOKASYA JANANIM SULA HASTAM TRILO
CANAM SARVADE VAMA YIMI SAM
DEVI MAVA HAYA MY AHAM DEVIM AVAHA YAMI SWAHA
I invoke the mother of the three worlds, the three eyed one with the spear in her hand, in whom all the gods reside. I invoke the goddess.
Now Kalash Puja:
KALASH (VARUNA) PUJA IS THE RE-CREATION OF
THE EARTH BY YOURSELF AS BRAMHA
Fill the kalasha with water. Offer sandalwood
powder, flowers and tulasi to decorate it. Place a coconut on top of the
vessel and put your palms over the top of it while chanting the following
mantras:

We invoke Lord Rudra (an aspect of Shiva) at the neck of the kalasha and Brahma at the base of the vessel. We invoke the Universal Mother Goddess and Her retinue in midst of the kalasha. Thus the male and female trinities are invoked. Salutations!

THE STORIES BEHIND DIWALI
The appearance in physical form of the Great Goddess Maha Laxmi is described in The Vishnu Purana, one of the most sacred legends of yore. It happened when both the Dewas (Gods) and the Demons were anxious to obtain "Amrita" the nectar of immorality. To obtain this nectar they had to churn the milky ocean which requires the joint effort of both parties.
The Dewas prayed to Brahma for help, and so the Creator designed an ingenious plan. He placed both parties to churn the Milky Ocean and using Mount Meru as a stick they stirred the milky ocean. A series of precious gems and many wonders came out and each of the two parties made their respective claim.
Suddenly, out of the spinning sea appeared a charming lady with extraordinary beauty, dressed with golden ornaments and pouring coins from two of her four hands. She stood on a Lotus, a symbol of detachment and purity. Indra the Lord of heavens provided a golden seat for her, the rivers gave of their waters to her in golden pots (kalas) and the Dewas rained flowers from above and offer praise to the manifestation of the Divine Energy of God Incarnate. Maha Laxmi then took her place by the left hand side of Narayan and was garlanded amidst the thundering of clouds. She then distributed the Nectar to the Dewas granting them everlasting life. From there on Laxmi is worshipped by devotees in various forms; the most popular being "light". Several incidents occurred on that day as time passed by, the slaying of Narkasur; the appearance of Lord Vishnu as "Vaaman" and his "breaking the pride" of Raja Bali, each conveying its own message of the necessity for destroying the demonical tendencies (Narkasur) within man and the complete removal of pride as a prerequisite towards the achievement of prosperity (Laxmi).
The coming together of the Dewas and The Daityas as a effort to churn the milky ocean demonstrates the necessity for the coming together of all people from all walks of life to unite in their efforts and surrender all actions, both good and bad to God and so achieve the common goal of God's benevolence (Amrita).
I therefore appeal to one and all to join The Hindu Society of America in it's effort to provide the opportunity to share the divine knowledge with all, so as to achieve God's benevolence of peace and prosperity.
In the Vedic Shastras, VISHNU which is the Male counterpart of LAXMI is know as the Lord of the Universe. The Universe in this case meaning ALL SPACE. LAXMI the consort of Vishnu or the Female counterpart of Vishnu is known as the GODDESS OF LIGHT. Then logically one can conclude that without LIGHT, SPACE cannot be observed. This is also very scientific. VISHNU married to LAXMI is known as LAXMINARAYANA or LIGHT-SPACE. One cannot exist without the other. NOW think about BRAMHA the Lord of CREATIVITY and SARASWATY the Goddess of KNOWLEDGE. How can creation take place without knowledge?
DEEPAVALI OR DIWALI - FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
One of the most widely observed festivals in India is Deepavali. "Deepa" means light and "avali" means a line or row. Thus it connotes a row of lights. The "lights" or "diyas" are reminders that we must bring light in our lives and purity in our souls. It is a time for rejoicing, money making, decorating houses, wearing new clothes, exchanging artistically designed greeting cards, sharing sweets with friends and relatives and arranging parties and get together. About two weeks before the day fire crackers, rockets, sizzles are lighted. This symbolizes the driving away of evil spirits. It displays a sign of prosperity and invites good fortune. A special prayer "Puja" is held with great religious fervor. Whim and fantasy permeates everyone and the glowing brightness creates a phenomenon that one cannot forget.
Festivals of India also warrant a moment of somber introspection. Holy scriptures preach that in pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat, we should poise our mind in tranquillity. "TAMSO MA JYOTIRJAMAYA" - lead me from darkness to light. Goddess Laxmi- the supreme goddess of wealth is a dynamic divinity. She is worshipped during Deepavali. Her sitting on a white Lotus is a symbol of purity. Her hands are holding a "kamal", Kalash" "swastik" and flowing profuse wealth. "Kamal" signifies the poise and purity of the soul, "Kalash" connotes the disciplining of the intellect. "Swastik" stands for the light of the inner and spiritual knowledge. The fourth hand represents the true urge of deep concentration. Some say worshipping Goddess Laxmi is mainly a quest for wealth and material gain but a true essence of her worship is the eternal consciousness of "Sar Chit Anand". "O Mother bestow on us the best treasurers, the efficient mind and spiritual luster, the increase of wealth, the soundness of health, the sweetness of speech and fairness of days" from the "Rigveda". She is the bestower of the fourfold rewards of life religious merit, worldly riches, sensuous enjoyment and liberation. In Indian literature many a folk tale conform goddness Laxmi's strength.
Deepavali is celebrated to mark the coronation of Lord Ram who after killing the formidable demon Ravon, returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshman completing fourteen years in exile. People were excited and Ayodhya was lit. Similarly another great demon Narakasur was terrorizing his subjects. Lord Krishna endowed with supernatural powers came on earth and killed the vile and the evil demon by just keeping his one foot on his head, thus preserving the bounds of prosperity to relieve the distress of the virtuous. From a swirl of festive and frantic mood of Deepavali the sudden transition to New Year is to stimulate and rejuvenate in a soothing and gracious atmosphere. Let us not forget to light the lamp of knowledge to get rid of the darkness of ignorance. According, to The Bhagvad Gita divine light dwells in he self and nowhere else. It shines alike in all human beings. And that is what Deepavali is all about!
